The Aftermath of 885 Burpees
The human body is capable of incredible things. I finished 885 burpees in 1 hour and 41 minutes. My dear friend Madison Abboud finished 513 burpees in 1 hour and 1 minute. Together, Madison and I logged 1398 consecutive burpees, and I felt every single one of them.
As I reflect on this reckless decision to attempt so many burpees, I want to share with you exactly how what I feel 2 days after completing the task. I do a lot of different activities that cause me to be sore: running, spartan races, workouts, and various sports to name a few. I've been sore in a lot of places, but I have never been sore in my rib cage. Every time I take a deep breath, it feels like I'm wearing a 50 pound weighted vest. On top of that my lats are killing me! Of all the areas to be sore, I surely thought my legs and chest would take the brunt of the hurt from these burpees. Instead, I've been taking shallow breaths while struggling to lift my arms overhead. I can only point to do reasons why my ribcage would be so sore: 1) I was breathing so hard for such a long period of time or 2) slamming my chest to the ground 885 times was bound to bruise my ribs. Either way...this type of soreness SUCKS!
The hardest part is keeping your heart rate low. As a full body movement, when you do a burpee rep back to back to back and so on, your heart rate goes through the roof very quickly. After doing just 10 burpees, your entire system goes into overdrive. Between each set of 10, I forced myself to take a break for at least 10-15 seconds..which turned into 20-30 seconds later on. At one point I tried to break up the sets in to 5 burpees followed by a shorter break. But because my break was shorter, my heart rate never really went back down.
At the end of the day, I'm just glad I finished. I knew doing this many burpees at the time would hurt, but I couldn't have imagined the soreness and pain that I would deal with days afterward. I'm proud of Madison and I for sticking to our agreement, but next year I definitely plan to curtail my sugar intake. No way am I EVER doing this many burpees again!!
