Goals for 2017

Here we go.

2017 will be about learning new skills, trying new things, broadening my horizons.  But first things first. In order to accomplish this years goals and other goals going forward, I need to take care of my body.

1. Mobility and Flexibility

I'm 30 now and this year I'm definitely starting to feel it. Not only am I less energetic, but I've noticed it takes a bit more energy to move as quickly or for as long as it use to.  After hard leg workouts, I feel like I'm stuck in the mud the next day. My hips can't turn, my lower back aches, and I'm developing tendinitis again in my IT Bands.  My own diagnosis: I gotta loosen up. Best way I figure to accomplish this is Yoga.  It's been a while since I've been to a yoga class, but I feel its time to jump back in.  I just gotta remember to bring 2 towels so I'm not trying to do tree pose in the middle of a puddle.

So here's the goal: I want to do yoga at least once a week.  Whether its a class, or a video I follow at home. If I don't post something about yoga at least once a week, call me out! It's that serious!

2. Jumping Clap behind the back push-up.

A friend sent me a video of a guy doing various clapping push up acrobatic break-dancing routines and I couldn't help but wonder how much work is actually necessary to achieve such moves! They look pretty darn cool, and I think this goal would be a nice break from all the heavy lifting I've done over the last few months.  Maybe I'll even put a routine together!

To accomplish this goal, I'll need documentation and hopefully recreate this picture here.

3. Handstand walks.

I'll admit, I love watching the Cross-Fit Games.  I find the Game Competitors to be out-of-this-world fit.  To do some of the workouts they do as fast as they do them, is super dangerous and insane.  But, I respect what they go through and how they adapt to any new obstacle.  A staple in the Cross Fit Games is a Handstand Walk of some time.  This is a move that I've wanted to do for a few years now, but really haven't dedicated the time to practice.  The goal here will be to complete a handstand walk of at least 20 yards non-stop by the end of the year.

4. Go to the finals of at least 2 basketball tournaments

Take a look at this fresh faced half asian kid after his very first New York basketball tournament.  We lost to a New York Team in the finals, but it was a great experience.  This was the first time I got to play with Ephriam (the guy to the left of the ref). After the tournament Eph was just messing around, attempting off the backboard windmill dunks, and coming pretty darn close to making them! If you cant tell, Eph and I are close the same height, and I'm barely 6'0 ft with shoes on.  I've never seen a guy his size with that kind of jumping ability, I was blown away.  Fast forward 8 years later, I have 5 Basketball tournaments scheduled between now and Memorial Day. The goal here is to make it to the Finals in at least 2 of the 5 Tournaments. Actually get to play with Eph again in two of the tournaments. Maybe I can convince him to give that windmill dunk another try...And finally...

5. Complete a triathlon.

Alright time to stop screwing around and do this.  Doing an Ironman has been on my bucket list for ever.  I've made up several excuses over the years to keep myself from even trying it, but the time is now.  Let's get the ball rolling at least. By the end of this year, I want to complete at least an Olympic distance Triathlon.  That means I must buy a bike. That means I need to work on my swim.  That means I need to buy a wetsuit.  I'll be spending a lot of time on craigslist.

Alright, there you have it.  I might add to this list as the year goes on.  But as always, incomplete goals must be paid for on New Years Day with 100 burpees per incomplete goal.  Wish me luck, and good luck to you and your 2017 fitness goals.  Let's go to work!
