Deep Fried Food Festival 2016!!!
Every year, I look forward to the Texas State Fair. But it's not because of the rides, or the games, or the shopping, or the endless crowds of people that draw me in..it's all about the food. If ya don't know by now, the Texas State Fair hosts the Deep Fried Food Festival. Each year, contestants come up with the tastiest and most creative deep fried food concoctions ever. Despite what ever I have going on in my life, I always make time for the D Triple F. There aren't too many things that bring me more joy in this life than eating some of my favorite foods, deep fried! Here are a few things we tried this year..
The description had me at hello. Doritos, Bacon, and Cheese all in one bite. But I must admit, I was pretty sad when all I got was what looked like a luke-warm mozzarella cheese stick rolled around in Doritos crumbs. The stick is no longer than about 3 inches, and takes no more than a few bites to finish. My biggest complaint was the lack of doritos taste! Needless to say, there's room for improvement here..
This was our favorite of the day. You can't tell by the picture, but each "Ding" provided a pretty competitive amount of pulled pork, satisfying my need for something with substance especially when I'm paying 8-10 dollars for these meals. The combination of the BBQ pulled pork works in harmony with the Funyun crusts, and the sauce compliments the sweet and savory taste of the entire bite. Definitely worth a try!
My first thought when I saw the winner for the most creative food was as follows: This thing is TINY! I zoomed in hardcore on this picture, and it turned out great. But it takes away from the reality of the absolutely small box of fries you get for 9 bucks. That being said, I really liked the idea. Who doesn't like cookies?! The taste was there, but I think we got a few fries that were bathing under the heatlamp for a little too long. Our fries were a bit too hard to chew at times. Overall, good idea, needed better execution.
Moving on to the winner of the best taste. Deep Fried Jello? The name itself doesn't spark too much imagination, nor did it scream winning taste combination. But I will say, it was pretty good! Again, like everything else we tried, what we got were two samples that aren't meant to satisfy your hunger. Also, I would like a bit more jello inside if possible.
Rounding out this year's highlights is Mark Cuban's personal favorite: Edible Cola. What you see here is a cup made of a Fruit-rollup-like candy filled with coca-cola. We had the choice from a number of cola options, but the cup itself only comes in two flavors. We chose the cherry, and the taste isn't bad. Just be careful when you take a bite, it's pretty easy to spill everything as you try to eat it!
